A&W Foot Long Wiener
is a skillfully crafted industrial Funk Art hot dog and bun on a platter that Dick Hay created with cast, thrown and glazed stoneware with his signature luster glaze. Casts of the cheese, olives and radiator tubes appear in other work by Hay, and here the radiator tubes form the meat of the wiener, bringing to mind the form of intestinal casing used for the real thing. In context of Hays sandwiches, which featured cast breasts as well as the cheese and olives seen in A&W Foot Long Wiener and in many ways serve as Hays female food form,
is Hays male food form. In this way, the cast radiator tubes become anything from the seminiferous tubules to the urethra, the olives are testees and the cheese ejaculate.
Yet that may be reading too much into Wiener, or Hays other self-described Funk Art in his
. Dick Hay himself has said that Funk Art is often nothing more than a one-line joke and endeavors to not take itself seriously. However, it is precisely his careful crafting of subversive forms and prodding artistic personality that cause one to deeper analysis. There is a seductive and provoking quality there that cannot be ignored.
